Notes

! James was the oldest of his siblings. He was first married to Mary ! Settles and they lived for several years in Va. He owned a large farm ! and was a slave owner. While in Va. four children were born, Sally, ! Samuel, Elizabeth, and John. From Virginia they moved to Kentucky and ! lived for several years, while there 3 more children were born, Julia, ! Margaret, and William. From Kentucky, they went to Missouri staying only ! a short time. Here Mariah was born. Again they moved to Clark Co., Ind. ! where Nancy was born. In 1827 they with their children moved to Johnson ! CO., Ind. and entered government land at $1.25 an acre, the land where ! Cora Owens now lives (early 1904). In 1837 they moved from there to ! Hensley Township where they lived a few months returning to Needham ! township in the fall of 1838. He then purchased a farm near where ! Urmeyville now stands, where he died in 1866. ! James was married four times, but I believe all his children were by Mary ! Settles. His second wife was Sally Law, who was the grandmother of Mrs. ! Sam White of Shelby Co. She died and he was again married to Hepsey ! Starbuck, a native of Washington Co., Ind. She is remembered by some of ! the older members of our family as a woman of many sterling qualities. ! She was an invalid being confined to her bed constantly for 14 years. ! She died and he was married again to Rebecca Richey who survived him a ! few years. He was a Democrat in politics and Baptist in religious belief ! being a member of the 2nd Mt. Pleasant church. He believed thoroughly in ! the baptist doctrines and one interesting story illustrating his belief ! in one of these doctrines of falling from grace was this. He said an old ! tree might be set on fire and after burning for sometime you would think ! the fire was all gone out but along comes a fresh breeze and lo! it is ! burning as lively as ever. He was a great hunter and liked to engage in ! this sport as long as he could walk. He was a very large man and was ! almost helpless for many years. Those who knew him remember him as a man ! having a great temper. He often said his disposition would be cast up to ! the Owens people even to the 3rd or 4th generation, saying that was the ! Jimmie in them. He would often say things in a fit of temper and ! threaten to do many things that after consideration he would be sorry he ! said. He was very much opposed to the marriage of his daughter whom we ! know as Aunt Mariah Stevens (grandmother Stevens to me) and threatened to ! shoot the man who took her from him, but finally gave his consent for the ! papers to be written out for their marriage, this being necessary because ! she was only 15. When Aunt Nancy was married she ran away too and he ! started after them and when he fell down he called to those watching him ! "to throw a little dirt over him, he was dead. Nancy was gone." ! In those days the women wore jeans cloth. After they had woven their ! cloth near the end they would weave a piece with stripes of red and ! white. Aunt Nancy made him a jacket of this kind of cloth and he did not ! like it and declared he would not wear it. He said if he should wear it ! old Dan McLean would come along and make fun of it and declared he would ! never wear it as long as he lived. But next morning when he got up he ! said, "Well Nancy, if I have to wear that jacket bring it out, I had as ! well begin this morning! my time!!"

! In 1850 James is on this census with Hephzipha age 44 born in Tenn. and ! Rebecca Ritchey age 25 born in Ky. and George W. Ramis age 9 born in Ind.
