! Lakeland Ledger - Mar. 23 1948 - Pg. 2 Col. 3 VETERAN'S DEATH CALLED SUICIDE - Former Navy man believed despondent. Winter Haven, March 23 (Special) Charles (Buddy) Rider, 35, recently discharged as a chief signalman in the Navy, died this morning at 3 o'clock in the Bartow City Hospital from what was termed by officers as a self-inflicted bullet wound. According to county authorities, Rider took a rifle from a wall at the home of his sister, Mrs. Mary Grubbs, in Bartow, and shot himself before his wife and sister could intervene. Mrs. Grubbs informed officers that her brother had received a letter from the Navy medical department during the day and had seemed despondent over the information it contained regarding his physical condition. He and Mrs. Rider had come to Bartow 10 days ago to visit Mrs. Grubbs and his father, George W. Rider. 17 Years Service After 17 years of service Rider had been awarded the U.S. Defense Medal for the American campaign and the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with battle stars; the Yangtze and China service ribbon, the Victory Medal and the good conduct ribbon. He had been discharged from the Naval hospital at Carona, Calif. Mr. Rider, who was a native of Mount Zion, Ill. is also survived by another sister, Mrs. Ruby McDade, Indianapolis, and two brothers Everette Rider, Marion, Ind, and Irvin Rider, Indianapolis. Arrangements for burial, in charge of the Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, are pending the arrival of relatives.
