!NEEDHAM VE (NEWSPAPER) CORPORAL 1861 - FRANKLIN RECEIVED GUNSHOT WOUND IN LEFT THIGH AT SELMA, ALA. APR. 2, 1865.

! Henry Clay Smiley mustered into the Army Feb. 25, 1864 and mustered out as a Corporal Aug. 8, 1865. He evidently went in with his two cousins John and James L. Smiley.

! Oct. 25, 1923 Henry Clay Smiley, age 81, a retired farmer and veteran of the Civil War, died last night at his home six miles east of Franklin. Death was caused by senility and a complication of diseases. He was a grandson of John Smiley, who founded the old Smiley mill many years ago. He was wounded at Selma, Ala., in 1865. He gained recognition during the war for his bravery. A member of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian church, he was an elder for seven years. Later transferred his membership to the Franklin Presbyterian church. Mr. Smiley was born on the farm where he died on September 25, 1842, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Springer Smiley. On April 22, 1873 he married Miss Ida Jane Patterson. THIS OBIT. WAS REPRINTED IN THE NOSTALGIA NEWS SPRING OF 1988 P. 97.

! Hugh Smiley - brother of John Smiley was probably the 1st teacher in the county of Johnson. Two of his granddaughters were also teachers in the Johnson Co., Indiana schools. Bertha and Kate Smiley. Also listed was May Smiley.
