! PIONEER DIES AT FARM HOME GRANT COUNTY Hartford City News Times Jan.12,1931 John Smith, 87, Father of R.O. and Arthur Smith Called Home FUNERAL ON TUESDAY Military Honors Will Be Accorded at Burial in Jefferson Cemetery obit. John Smith, 87, a pioneer and influential resident of Grant county, died Saturday at midnight at his home, about six and a half miles northeast of this city, (Upland) following a week's critical illness due to a general breakdown and a weakened heart. Mr. Smith was the father of R.O. and A.W. Smith of the Hoover Furniture store, this city. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning from the late home, in charge of Rev. H.C. Cornvelle, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city. Burial will be made in the Jefferson cemetery, west of Upland. Friends may view the remains at the late residence until the fun- eral hour. The Hoover Furniture store here will be closed Tuesday until noon, during the funeral. Pallbearers will be Pearl Hodson, Lora Tudor, Forest Miller, Earl Bragg, Clyde Keever and Vearl Hultz. Mr. Smith's death followed a year's general decline in health. A year ago on December 23rd he was stricken seriously ill and for a time, little or no hope was held for his recovery. He made a very galiant fight, however, and recovered sufficiently to be about his home and his farm. He became bedfast a week ago Friday, and his decline was rapid from that time. His illness was the cause of deep regret among his legions of friends and his passing caused much sorrow. Scores of friends from both Grant and Blackford counties called at the Smith home during the day Sunday and Monday, to offer their sympathy and condolence to members of his family. PIONEER RESIDENT Mr. Smith had spent 85 years of his life on the farm where he died. His span of years had covered the ox-wagon period of pioneer days to the modern age of the airplane, and in this time he had acquired considerable wealth. He commanded the admiration and respect of all who knew him in a business way. Mr. Smith was the first president of the Upland State bank and served in that capacity for seven years. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, serving for more than a year in Company H. He enlisted when he was 21 years of age. The greater portion of his service was spent in Tennessee. The American Legion post of Upland will pay tribute to Mr. Smith by sending a firing squad to the funeral, to accord him the military honor of a salute at the graveside. After his period of service to the Union cause, Mr. Smith returned to his farm home in Grant county. Surviving, other than the two sons, residing in this city, are the following other children. Miss Pluma Smith, at home; Dr. Harry Smith, of Seattle, Wash; Charles Smith, residing near his father's home in Grant county; seven grandchildren and one brother, Hiram Smith, age 75, a widely known Blackford county farmer. Two daughters and one son are de- ceased. They are Ira Smith, who died when a child; Thana, who died at the age of 21, and Mrs. Lelah Ervin, formerly of this city. Born in Ohio Mr. Smith was born November 15, 1843 near Alliance, Ohio, the son of Thomas and Mary Leonard Smith. When but a year and a half of age, he came with his parents to this section of Indiana, the family going direct- ly to the site of the present farm home. A log cabin, erected by his father is still standing on the 160 acres of land, entered and obtained by his father from the government. Mr. Smith's life had been closely associated with the history and advancement of this section of the state. Not long ago, he recalled to his sons, some of the interesting incidents of those pioneer days. He detailed the trip of his mother and elder brother, Wesley and himself to Indiana by wagon, recalling that they spent the night in the Blackford county courthouse enroute to their Grant county home. Mr. Smith's father had preceeded them to prepare for their arrival in the then, sparsely settled community. Mr. Smith's father later served as postmaster at Jadden, in Grant county. The son, John, carried mail by horseback from Bremen, Ohio to Jadden. He knew the hardships of those early pioneer days and was schooled in their rigors. Mr. Smith attended the early schools of that vicinity. Before his marriage to Miss Lucy Bocock, on Feb 12 1874, Mr. Smith had purchased 40 acres of land from his father, and had erected thereon a four room house, which is now a part of the beautiful and modern country home. His wife was a daughter of James Bocock, also a pioneer settler of that com- munity. She was born within a mile of the Smith homestead. Mrs. Smith died on June 22, 1922, after a happy companionship of over 48 years. While Mr. Smith took an active interest in politics, being promin- ent in republican ranks, he never sought a political office. He was drafted by his party however, to serve on the advisory board of Monroe township, Grant county. Mr. Smith was a member of the Friends church at Walnut Creek, located near the Smith home, for over forty years. He was a former mem- ber of the G.A.R. Post at Upland. The news of his sudden passing was telegraphed Sunday to his son, Dr. Harry Smith, at Seattle, whose daughter, Miss Virginia is to become the bride Thursday evening of Guy Halferty, also of Seattle. The wed- ding, previously prearranged, is to be solemnized at a Seattle church. Among the visitors at the Smith home Sunday, who called to extend their sympathies, were Thomas Barr, of Indianapolis, state bank commis- sioner, and Miss Ethel Ward former teacher at the school near the Smith home. They were reared in that vicinity and held in the highest regard Mr. Smith. George Cole, president of the First National Bank, Marion, and his wife, were also at the Smith home during Sunday evening.
