She was widely known over the county among the older residents as a !woman of fine Christian character. ! She became ill last Sunday following a visit at Shelbyville but her !condition was not believed to be serious. However, her condition became more !critical and she failed rapidly during the latter part of the week. Death !occurred Saturday evening at 6:00 o'clock. ! Funeral services will be held from the residence, 276 South Forsyth !street, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock with the burial in Greenlawn cemetery. !Friends may call at the residence at any hour. ! Student at Franklin College. ! Mrs. Smiley was born in Johnson county on the farm east of Franklin which !was owned by her parents, Gideon and Mariah Stevens, on September 18, 1845. !Her parents were among the early residents of the county and were prominent !in their community for many years. She attended Franklin College for several !years prior to the outbreak of the Civil War and during the war period served !as a school teacher, teaching in the Anderson school, south of Franklin, and in !the Brandywine school in Brandywine township, Shelby county. ! Reminiscences of her girlhood and of student days in Franklin College were !told in a most entertaining manner by Mrs. Smiley who delighted in comparing !her college days and the schools of that period with the present. Her !experiences as a teacher also formed a valued fund of information of the early !days of the county and the life of the residents during the stirring years of !the Civil War. ! Married at Close of War. ! In 1866, following the close of the War, she was united in marriage to !John Smiley, who had recently returned to the county after receiving his !honorable discharge from the Union army, as a member of Co. E 17th Indiana !Infantry. Her husband was the son of Dr.J.M. Smiley, who practiced at Edinburg !for a number of years, later moving to what is known as the Smiley's Mill !community, east of Franklin. It was to this community that Mr. and Mrs Smiley !moved immediately after their marriage. ! They resided on the farm until 1904 when they retired and moved to the !present residence of South Forsyth street. It was here that the death of Mr. !Smiley occurred several years ago. From the time of her marriage, Mrs. Smiley !had been a member of the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian church and most recent !years had been active in the various departments of the church. She was one of !the few surviving charter members of Shiloh Aid Society in which organization !she had taken a prominent part for many years. ! Four Children Survive. ! She is survived by four children, two daughters, Mrs. Harve Tucker of !Shelbyville, and Mrs. Grace Alexander of Franklin, and two sons Carl Smiley of !Greenwood, and Ora Smiley, who with Mrs. Alexander resided with the mother. !Two daughters have preceded her in death. Also surviving are three sisters, !Mrs. H.E. Todd, Mrs Ann Hendricks and Miss Sarah Stevens and a brother, George !Stevens, all of Franklin. ! Among the surviving grandchildren is Mrs. Dortha Ferris Hogue, who was !taken by Mrs. Smiley following the death of Mrs. Hogue's mother, a daughter of !Mrs. Smiley. Upon this granddaughter Mrs. Smiley had centered her interest and !devotion for many years with an affection which was fully repaid. Several !other grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
