!Franklin, Indiana Newspaper, Tuesday, November 12, 1946 Carl Beard Is Stricken Successful Career of Carl Beard, 56, Is Ended By Death Rose From Poor Franklin Boy To Fame And Fortune Within 30 Years; Rites Thursday In This City Death today had ended the successful career of Carl Beard, whose almost meteoric rise from a poor Franklin boy to fame and fortune covered the brief span of but 30 years. Mr. Beard died at 5:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he had been taken Sunday morning. He had been in failing health since March 1945. Rites will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Vandivier funeral home, followed by burial in the Second Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the mortuary Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 5 o'clock, in the evening from 3 to 9 p.m., and anytime Thursday. Mr. Beard, who would have been 56 years of age, November 18, was born at Leroy, Ill., in 1890, and was the son of Otto and Effie J. Beard. He came to Johnson county as a youth, and started his climb in 1916 when he went from here to Nebraska on a motorcycle, and with only $10. in his possession. Started As A Trapper During his first year he trapped muskrats and sold their pelts. At the time of his death, 30 years later, he owned over 6,000 acres of land in Nebraska and Colorado, four grain elevators, was president of the First National Bank in Llewellen, Neb.; owner of the Beard Oil Company, with stations throughout Garden county, Neb.; owner of the State Theater in Llewellen; and distributor of farm implements and machinery; and one of the biggest stock feeders in Nebraska. Last September he came back to Franklin to spend the last weeks of his life with his mother, Mrs. Effie Beard, at 30 East King Street. His father and brother, Clarence Beard, of Kearney, Neb., preceded him in death. Surviving with the mother are a sister, Mrs. J.K. Blankard, of Martinsville; four nieces and three nephews, including Mrs. Gentry Spicer and William O. Beard, both of Llewellen; Mrs. Charles Fox, Mrs. Gene Swift, Jack Beard, Delores Beard and Ronnie Beard, all of Karney. Interests Were Enormous So enormous were Mr. Beard's interests that his purchases of livestock, cattle and sheep was offtimes as large as five trainloads at the time. His business ventures were numerous and widespread, and he was known throughout Nebraska for his many activities. This year Mr. Beard's wheat, about 2100 acres, averaged approximately 50 bushels to the acre, and one 640-acre crop averaged better than 62 bushels. Even in such a large yield, Mr. Beard sowed only 23 pounds of wheat to the acre, and used no fertilizer. Though Mr. Beard achieved success the hard way, at the same time he was blessed with a fine ancestral backing noted for shrewdness in business and in farming.
