!The following news item was not dated, but appears to have been printed shortly after his death. Enlisted in Navy - He attended the Needham township and Franklin schools and on June 23, 1943 during his sophmore year in high school he enlisted in the Navy, and received his boot training at Great Lakes naval training station. Seaman Norman was schooled in communications at Dallas, Texas, and in radio operations at Norfolk, Va. March 31, 1944 he was sent to foreign service. He was buried on Okinawa. The survivors are the father and mother, one sister, Mrs. Robert Byers of Denver, Colo., a brother, Richard Norman, the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Emma Grubb, both of Franklin, and the paternal grandfather, Frank Norman, of Greenwood. He was a member of the Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist church. !March 17, 1949 Graveside Rites Set - Funeral Services Will be Held For William B. Norman-Body Of Franklin Veteran To Arrive In City On Friday The body of William B. Norman, Jr., Seaman First Class, will arrive in Franklin Friday afternoon at 1:50 o'clock and will be taken to the Vandiver funeral home. Graveside services are to be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Greenlawn cemetery with the Rev. L. Paul Bowling, of the Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist church conducting the service. It is requested that no flowers be sent. S 1/C Norman was killed in acton in the invasion of Okinawa on April 16, 1945. He was serving on a destroyer escort. Born near Needham on Nov. 11, 1925, he was the son of William B. and Edith Grubb Norman and his entire life was spent in Johnson county. !Final Rites Held for William Norman - March 22, 1949 Graveside services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Greenlawn cemetery for Seaman First Class William B. Norman, Jr. The Rev. Paul Bowling, pastor of the Second Mt. Pleasant Baptist church of which young Norman was a member, was in charge of the rites. S:1/c Norman was killed April 16, 1845 in the invasion of Okinawa when he was serving with a destroyer escort, and was buried on the island. A native of Needham township, his entire life was spent here and he attended the Needham township school and Franklin high school. He is survived by his father and mother, a sister, a brother, the maternal grandmother and the paternal grandfather.
