!Ephraim Tucker III, oldest child of Ephraim and Phebe Hand Tucker was born December 16, 1792 in Essex County, New Jersey. Tradition relates that Ephraim Tucker preceded his family to Ohio and a part of the journey was made by boat on the Ohio River, when the boat came near Cincinnati, it was wrecked, young Tucker cast aside his shoes and swam ashore. He found refuge in a cabin on the shore, the owner of which, dried and pressed his clothing. When he was dressed again, but without his shoes, he found that his money was missing, either lost during his swim or removed during the drying process, at any rate, he was penniless among strangers. He found work immediately with a blacksmith. He served in the War of 1812 in the Ohio militia in Captain Enoch Gest's company of Colonel William Cotgreen's detached Regiment. Period of service from February 17th to March 17th, 1813. !He married Winnaford Hood in 1814. At the present time nothing has been learned of her parents though it is tradition that she was of the same family of Hoods that produced the Confederate General, Lieutenant General John B. Hood of Civil War fame. She was decidely Scotch and boasted of her Scotch ancestry. She had a neice, Julia Hood, who married Joseph Dillman, they lived in Preble County, Ohio. She was a very large woman with black hair and brown eyes. She died March 17, 1853, from smallpox, contracted while ministering to the need of a destitute family in the neighborhood. !Ephraim Tucker was a large landowner in Preble County, Ohio, but the lure of cheap land in Indiana and the strain of adventurous blood in his veins probably decided this pioneer to move westward. Members of the family still own the original patents for many acres of land in Shelby and Johnson Counties of Indiana (1930's). Two of these entries were made as early as 1837, though it is probable that Ephraim Tucker did not come to Shelby County until 1839. In January of that year he sold his farm in Preble County, Ohio and the removal of the Tucker contingent must have been somewhat reminiscent of the removal of Jacob from Canaan into Egypt for tradition tells us that Ephraim Tucker started on this journey of somewhat over a hundred miles driving his sheep, hogs and cattle before him, followed by ten wagons. The latter containing his family, his household goods and implements. Of the length of time required for the journey, we have no record, but the cavalcade arrived at Tucker's Ford on Sugar Creek in sight of the new home in the wilderness at twi'light hour, the homesick women and girls of the party weeping and wailing and begging to return to their home in Ohio. This was not surprising for they had left a comfortable home, schools, (the older girls were educated at Oxford, Ohio) for a cabin in the woods surrounded by bears, wolves and occasional roving Indians, the fact that they were not harmed by these prowlers did not lessen the dread of what might happen and as long as Ephraim Tucker was able to attend church, walking the short distance from his home near Second Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, he carried his long gun over his shoulder and set it in the corner of the "meeting house", much to the amusement of the younger generation, who not having lived through the hardships of making this neighborhood, could not visualize the courage and fortitude required to attain the results we see today. Mr. John Roe told this story, he being one of the youngsters who as he expressed it, "snickered" behind his hand when old "Uncle Effie" walked in. !Ephraim Tucker gave to each of his children as they married, 150 acres of land, his generousity including Henry H. Tucker, a child who was reared in his home. After his death, April 3, 1873, 800 acres was distributed among his children. !His second wife was Nancy Welliver, widow of Isaiah Welliver, her maiden name was Nancy Sample. She and Isaiah Welliver were the parents of seven children. She and Ephraim Tucker were married in Butler County, Ohio, she received her part of his estate in money, he left $19,000. in cash beside the land. He died intestate and there was some difficulty over the settlement. !Ephraim Tucker and his wife, Winnaford Hood Tucker were members of the Second Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Johnson County, Indiana. Their home place being situated across the road from the church, (this road is the county line road between Johnson and Shelby counties at this point). Ephraim Tucker lived in Shelby County but owned land in Johnson County also, and the Rev. John Reece in his historical sketch of the church, published in Brant and Fuller's History of Shelby County, Indiana, 1887, page 382, states "Beside the constituent members, the following deserve to be remembered as active workers in the church, viz: John Willard and wife, William A. Reese and wife, (the wife of William A. Reese was Emily Tucker, daughter of Ephriam and Winnaford Hood Tucker and Phebe Ann Tucker, first wife of the author of this sketch was also a daughter, William Needham and wife, Ephraim Tucker and wife, William Webb and wife, with many others did good service in the cause of Christ". !He was a devout man, liberal in disposition, and his epitaph was well chosen, "Blessed is he that considereth the poor, the Lord will preserve him and keep him alive; And he shall be blessed upon the earth". !Copy of record from Bible of Ephraim & Winnaford Hood Tucker, owned (1930's) by Mrs. Winnaford Strickler Allen. !Preble County Land Records for Ephraim Tucker III Aug. 5, 1820 Ephriam T. purchased from Sam Cornwall 20 acres Feb. 4, 1820 " " " Daniel Ross 60 " May 15, 1826 " " " James Allen 80 " Nov. 1, 1831 " " " David McMechan 160 " Apr. 2, 1833 " " " Edward Ogle 30 " Dec. 6, 1834 " " " Joseph Echard 35 " Jan 12, 1832 " sold to Lewis Loop 60 " Jan. 2, 1836 " " " Christian Holderman 35 " Leaving a farm of 290 acres. His last sale is recorded in Vol. 19, page 217, witness by William Hall, as Justice of Peace of Preble County & his wife Sarah, on Jan 2, 1836 & recorded on Jan. 20, 1836. The 160 a. farm he bought from David McMechan, McMechan appeared before Mr. A.F. Darr, a J.P. of Butler County, Ohio on Nov. 1, 1831 and the deed was recorded in Preble County Aug. 1, 1832. The recorder informed me (George Tucker dtd. 4/2/1935) that it seemed to be the custom with the farmers then not to be in a hurry to record their deeds as many were not recorded for as much as five years after the transfer was made. On Jan. 10, 1839, Ephriam Tucker sold to James Barnett, 20 a.- 30 a. - 60 a.- 100 a. and 80 acres, making a total of 290 acre farm for $7000. as recorded in Vol. 24 page 165. The deed was signed by Ephraim Tucker and Winnifred (her mark) Tucker. in the presence of Wm. Hall a Justice of Peace of Preble County and Felix Marsh as a witness and the deed is recorded under date of Feb. 11, 1839, so I have concluded that the date of his moving to Shelbly County Indiana must have been closer to the 1839 date, as he would not likely leave a $7000. farm to renters for 7 or 8 years.

!Ephraim Tucker Jr. (son of Ephraim Tucker Sr. and Sarah Miller) was born in Essex County, New Jersey, May 25, 1770 and died in Reily Township, Butler County, Ohio, August 1, 1844. His will is recorded in Butler County, Ohio. Feb. 20, 1791, he married Phebe Hand, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Cole) Hand, born July 11, 1775 in Somerset County, New Jersey, she died in Shelby County, Indiana, Nov 27, 1850, buried at Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana. They removed to Ohio from Essex County, New Jersey, sometime after July of 1811, this date calculated from the fact that Joseph L. Tucker, son Ephraim & Phebe Hand Tucker was born in Essex Co., New Jersey, July 11, 1811 (Page 598, Chadwicks History of Shelby Co., Indiana) A reference is found in Essex County, New Jersey Deeds, Book M-2, page 249, "Ephraim and Phebe Hand Tucker sold their 'plantation' in Westfield to John Lacey in 1808." Beginning at a post in S.W. side of road leading by Tucker's dwelling house, being N. corner of said property and the E. corner of land of late Isaac Cole, dec. from thence running with said Coles line S.W. to a walnut tree being John Osborn's corner, thence binding on his line S.E. to a stake, being another corner of said Osborn, thence on his line S.W. to a stone being former Joseph Lamb's corner, thence with that line S.E. to a stake being Acken's corner, thence along his line and Samuel Downer's line to a stake by side of the road, being Samuel Downer's corner, thence along said road to place of beginning. Containing 30 acres more or less. Odd they sold out at least 3 years before leaving the area, however the next child after Joseph L. Tucker, was Henry Lines Tucker and he was born in Butler County, Ohio, Nov. 17, 1814. Ephraim Tucker is buried in the Indian Creek Baptist Church Cemetery of Butler County, Ohio. This cemetery is located four and one half miles south-west of Oxford, Ohio. The inscription on his stone reads as follows; Ephraim Tucker, died August 1, 1844 aged 74 years 3m. 6d. "Tis finished, tis done, the spirit has fled The prisoner is gone, the Christian dead. The Christian is living, through Jesus love, and gladly receiving a Kingdom above."

!An examination of the records of Butler County, Ohio, by Mr. George Tucker of College, shows that Ephraim Tucker owned various parcels of land in the County and in 1816 he was given a patent for a tract of land containing 167.26 acres, issued by President James Madison. This land was, at the time it was given in what is now Hamilton County, Ohio. In 1835, this part of the county was transferred to Butler County and this tract is situated about 1 1/2 miles from the Indian Creek Baptist Church (directly east on the north & south road from Oxford to the town of Reiley. In the final settlement of the estate of Ephraim Tucker, Elijah Vanness, who married Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of Ephraim and Phebe Hand Tucker bought the shares of the other heirs. Samuel Tucker of Hendricks Township, Shelby County, Indiana, at the present time, 1934, owns the family bible of Ephraim and Phebe Hand Tucker, this family record gives the birth of a Betsy Tucker, March 7, 1800 and eighteen years later, February 13, 1818 is recorded the birth of another Betsy, Mr. John Vanness expressed his belief that the first Betsy was Betsy Wilkinson, wife of Cornelius Frazee Tucker, but the most logical solution seems to be that the first Elizabeth was a daughter of Ephraim and Phebe Tucker and that she died early in life and the second Elizabeth or Betsy was named for the deceased sister as this was often done and the fact that the marriage of an Elizabeth Tucker to James Pritchard is recorded in the Butler County Court Records - July 18, 1816 seems to substantiate this theory. !United States Dept. of the Interior General Land Office - Washington Sept. 10, 1932 In reply to 1469955 "K" MKH Ohio Lands To Mr. Benjamin Tranter 448 East Madison Street Franklin, Indiana Dear Sir, Referring to your letter of Sept. 5, 1932, you are advised the records show Ephraim Tucker of Butler County, Ohio, purchased the SE 1/4 sec. 35, T.10, R.1, containing 167.26 acres, in Butler County, Cincinnati District, Ohio on January 4, 1816, at $2. per acre, under authority of the act of May 10, 1800, entitled "An Act providing for a sale of the lands of the United States in the territory northwest of the Ohio and above the mouth of Kentucky River". Patent for said tract isssued to Eprhaim Tucker on June 1, 1816. A copy of this patent, is recorded in Vol. 16, page 52. etc.

!Land purchases by Tucker men in Franklin County, Indiana. Walter Tucker bought July 28, 1812 160 acres " " Sept. 7, 1814 157 " Ephraim Tucker " Jan. 4, 1816 167 1/2 " Benjamin Tucker " April 3, 1817 160 " James C. I don't know who he was?? SDW Benjamin was a cousin.

!The writer (of the original 1934 genealogy) inherited a small book belonging to Phebe Hand Tucker, "Practical Piety or The Influence of the Religion of the Heart on the Conduct of Life" by Hannah More, it was printed and published by Thomas T. Skillman at Lexington, Kentucky in 1823 and has inscribed on the fly-leaf, Phebe hand T. and in another place, Phebe hand Tucker. Between the leaves of this volume on old and much discolored paper was a beautifully cut silhouette; penciled on one side the inscription, Phebe hand Tucker, on the other side, N.J. in colored ink and penciled in ew - ersey, indicating one would think that the silhouette was cut while they were living in New Jersey. The time is long past when we might have gained intimate knowledge of these forebears but such information as we have been able to collect from different sources is recorded, hoping to benefit those who come after us and the few possessions that were once theirs carefully treasured. ! "When I consider what past fires have burned To light the spard within my house of life, Kept glowing on a chain of alters rife, With sentiment flame since first the planets twined I marvel at the strength of love concerned To guard its life in perpetuity; A watcher, faithful to eternity Has fed the constant flame in that long line, What sights of changing land and surging sea, What thoughts emerged with the expanding sky, Old trends, old faiths, old fears, in part are mine, Some residue of each now burn in me, Live coals aglow as age on age went by." Wasson Recorder NOTE: Shelby County Will Record Book 4 Page 345 !It is interesting to note that at some time or other the greater number of the children of Ephraim Tucker and Phebe Hand Tucker were residents of Indiana. Elijah Tucker may have been the first but he did not venture far into the state. In 1835 he bought land in Union Township, Union County, just across the Ohio - Indiana line and lived on his farm until his death in 1852. James Cole Tucker, we are inclined to think, was the first of the family to venture into the wilds of Shelby County, his daughter Sarah, who married Adam Brandt, was born in Ohio, Feb 9, 1835, and his daughter Rhoda was married to Jefferson Reese in Shelby County, Indiana, April 19, 1836, this would indicate the approximate date of arrival. Ephraim Tucker "entered" land in Shelby Co., Indiana as early as 1837 but did not become a settler until the spring of 1839, but his daughter, Ann Mariah Cornwell, with her husband, came sometime after her marriage in 1832. Cornelius Frazee Tucker died in Butler Co., Ohio and there is nothing to indicate that he ever left the state. Sarah Miller Tucker Laing Hand was at some time a resident of Shelbyville, Indiana. Hannah Tucker Hand died in Shelby County. Of Elizabeth Tucker Pritchard there is no record. Rhoda Tucker, who married Brooks Ross, it is thought, died in Cincinnati. Daniel L. Tucker came to Shelby County, tarried awhile and went on to Illinois. Mary Tuckerk, who was the 2nd wife of Brooks Ross also died in Cincinnate. Her son, Oliver Ross, however was a resident of Shelby Co., and is buried in Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Joseph L. Tucker came to Indiana, likely after the death of his father, as he and Elijah are named executors. Henry L. Tucker came in 1841, this date is known as also the time of arrival of Phebe Tucker Ross which was in 1848. Elizabeth Tucker, 2nd, who married Elijah Vanness was probably not a resident of Shelby County but the family bought land and one son lived within its confines for ten years and she made many visits and was at her mother's bed-side when she died, in 1850, receiving from her the family Bible which was next owned by Samuel Tucker, son of Henry L. Tucker.
